“One Health” is a solution that coordinates action across industries such as health, veterinary medicine and the environment to achieve the best possible health outcomes for all species.
Antibiotic resistance is a growing threat to human health globally. An estimated 700,000 people die each year worldwide from infection with resistant bacteria. Many microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites affect the health of both animals and humans through the environment they share, up to 60% of all human diseases originate. from animals. This means that as bacteria develop drug resistance in animals, they can easily affect human health, making it difficult to treat infections.
If only the health sector tries to ensure that antibiotics are used properly in the community and in health facilities, it will not solve the problem. Therefore, WHO offers “One Health” (“One Health”) solution to bring together specialists in human, animal, food and environmental health into a force and coordinate actions. the only way to keep the antibiotic still active.
Antibiotics are widely used in livestock production, sometimes to promote growth and prevent infection, rather than just to treat sick livestock animals. Overuse of these antibiotics can lead to greater resistance among the bacteria. The antibiotics used in humans and animals in livestock production and food production are often similar. The food chain is an important route to disease transmission that requires close monitoring and coordination to prevent its spread. All this indicates that no industry alone is capable of tackling the growing problem of antibiotic resistance, but if there is interdisciplinary action in action, resistance can be prevented.
The “One Health” solution means coordinating action across sectors such as public health, veterinary medicine and the environment to achieve the best possible health outcomes for all species. Resistant bacteria have no boundaries, they can be easily transmitted from person to animal and spread from one geographical location to another. An effective way to protect human health is to reduce the resistance of bacteria to develop between bacteria in animals. Many countries are eliminating the use of antibiotics as a growth promoter and preventive measure in livestock, and only use antibiotics in healthy animals in very special cases. Countries that have not yet done so are encouraged to ensure that drugs on the list of essential antibiotics, those of greatest importance to human and animal health, are used only when really necessary. This helps to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance and keeps the antibiotic still active for both humans and animals.

One Health Toolkit for the handling of SARS-CoV-2 companion pets for veterinarians and public health workers involved in the management of companion animals diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 and other One Health partners.
This toolkit provides recommendations for veterinarians and public health workers involved in the management of companion animals diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2, including pets that need hospitalization and those in need of hospitalization. The animal can be quarantined or managed at home. Other states or jurisdictions may have their own specific requirements for these situations.
The main way people become infected with SARS-CoV-2, the Corona 2019 virus (COVID-19), is through human-to-human transmission. Based on the limited available data, the risk that animals, including pets, of transmitting SARS-CoV-2 to humans is low. However, in the event of a companion animal that tests positive for SARS-CoV-2, the local, state and federal veterinary and public health partners should be prepared to administer additional treatments. Take steps to minimize the potential risk associated with contact with these animals.
Preparing the public health response for a diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 in companion animals will include drafting policies and procedures, evaluating resources and connecting with partners at all levels (e.g. eg public health agency, veterinary agency, animal service, local government and legal authorities, among other relevant partners). Veterinary and public health workers should cooperate by using One Health solution to investigate companion animals infected with SARS-CoV-2 while ensuring their own safety. The CDC’s One Health COVID-19 Working Group is available to provide guidance and technical assistance to tribal, territorial, local, and state areas for managing companion animals diagnosed with SARS -CoV-2.
Although commercial laboratories can perform SARS-CoV-2 testing in animals, confirmation testing is only available through USDA National Veterinary Service Laboratories (NVSL). USDA is responsible for reporting any animal that tests positive for SARS-CoV-2 in the United States to the World Animal Health Organization (OIE).
